Cosmetically improving your smile

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are highly popular solution to cosmetically improve a smile while still maintaining healthy tooth structure, commonly seen on television makeover shows because they are a quick, easy and effective solution to covering minor defects in teeth.

Veneers are very thin, tooth-coloured porcelain shells that are permanently bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They are custom-made to match not only the colour but the size and shape of your natural teeth, so they look like you were born with them. Veneers can best be described as being like false fingernails for your smile.

Porcelain veneers can be used to:

  • Cover stains or whiten teeth
  • Enhance shape of teeth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Maintain your natural tooth structure
  • Amend the length or size of teeth
  • Realign crooked teeth

    Are veneers temporary?

No, porcelain veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth and cannot be removed.

    Can veneers be whitened?

No, teeth whitening only works on natural teeth, so if you are considering whitening your other teeth, we advise having it done prior to having veneers fitted.

Are veneers as strong as natural teeth?

Yes, today’s veneers are made from very strong composite material that withstands as much pressure as your natural teeth.

    White fillings in Malvern

Natural tooth-coloured fillings, also called composites, are much more popular today than traditional amalgam, or metal, ones. This is for two reasons – health, as patients are increasingly wary of having metal and especially mercury, in their mouths, and aesthetics, as a mouthful of metal isn’t considered to be attractive.

Previously, white fillings weren’t considered to be of adequate strength for rear teeth, but that’s no longer the case. Composite material is also used in a cosmetic way to restore minor defects in teeth, such as filling in gaps between teeth and smoothing over chips and cracks. In all cases, the colour of the composite will be specially-matched to that of your teeth so the filling will blend seamlessly.

Can I have my old metal fillings replaced with white ones?

This depends on the extent of the filling and the condition it’s in. In some cases, it’s not clinically advisable to remove an old amalgam and instead we might recommend covering it over with an inlay or onlay.

Can I have a white filling on my molar?

Yes, composite material today is strong enough to withstand the biting and grinding forces exerted by even the back teeth.

Will a white filling damage my tooth?

No, in fact preparing your tooth for a white filling involves less drilling than for an amalgam filling, as the composite bonds easier to your tooth’s surface.
